MAP TECHNOLOGY: THE BATTLE AGAINST FOOD WASTE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Globally, food wastage is a pressing issue, amounting to 30% of total annual food production, or approximately 1.3 billion tons of food wasted. Vietnam ranks second in Asia-Pacific for food wastage, with over 8 million tons wasted annually, equivalent to $3.9 billion or nearly 2% of the current GDP, double that of many advanced economies (Source: The Saigon Times).
To combat this issue, we need to address various factors, including appropriate packaging and packaging technology to extend the shelf life of products. Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is a solution that customizes the gas mixture inside the packaging to match the specific food type, prolonging shelf life and freshness. Mylan Group is at the forefront of introducing this technology to Vietnam, recognizing its benefits.
- Extended Shelf Life and Reduced Waste: MAP technology, using CO2, N2, and O2, extends food preservation by 1.5 to 3 times compared to traditional packaging. This means that fresh meat and produce can last up to 15 days, seafood (e.g., shrimp) for up to 10 days, and cooked food for up to 60 days at 0-4°C, ultimately reducing food waste.
- Preservative-Free Solution: Utilizing advanced gas packaging technology reduces food waste without the need for preservatives. This efficiency is achieved through the role of customizable natural gases injected into the packaging during the food packaging process. CO2 gas inhibits the growth of aerobic microorganisms and molds and hinders cell respiration. O2 gas helps maintain cell respiration, inhibits the growth of anaerobic microorganisms and preserves freshness (especially for meat). N2 serves as a filling gas while also inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. Using these natural gases in preservation packaging extends shelf life and minimizes food waste across the supply chain.
- Reducing the risk of food safety concerns: MAP technology diminishes the risk of contamination and foodborne illnesses by maintaining a controlled gas environment around the food. This ensures food safety, especially in light of increasing antibiotic resistance among bacteria.
MAP Packaging Materials: MAP packaging is designed to prevent the intrusion of external air and is often crafted from materials like PP, Tie, EVOH, and Ceramic. Mylan Group is the sole manufacturer of these multi-layer trays and films in Vietnam.
