The beverage businesses are continuously investing and actively driving improvements in the packaging stage.

During the seminar, the Energy and Resources Institute of India (TERI), in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (INEST) at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), presented an assessment of the Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) of different beverage packaging types in Vietnam.

Mr. Souvik Bhattacharjya, Deputy Director of TERI and head of the research team, mentioned that the study aims to provide deeper insights into sustainable choices for beverage packaging. This effort intends to assist involved stakeholders along the production chain in making appropriate decisions, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting the circular economy.

Mr. Amit Lahoti, Senior Commercial Director and Asia General Manager at Ball Beverage Packaging Group, further disclosed that in Vietnam, over 77% of aluminum cans are being collected for recycling. The TBC-Ball cans from the company, evaluated in this study, contain over 76% recycled materials, marking the highest rate of material circularity.

“This research holds particular significance due to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly packaging solutions. The findings stress the imperative need to bolster recycling systems, focusing on recyclability with feasible technological aspects and maximizing the refill cycle of designed containers for reuse,” emphasized Mr. Amit Lahoti.

Dr. Mai Thanh Dung, Deputy Director of the Institute of Strategy, Policy for Natural Resources, and Environment (ISPONRE), noted that the research evaluation provides numerous insights for the beverage packaging sector. Enterprises within the industry can implement circular economy solutions right from the design phase, material selection, product design, distribution processes, consumption, and recovery. This approach ensures minimizing raw material usage, elongating the product’s lifecycle, reducing waste generation, and mitigating adverse environmental impacts.
