Catch Up on Vietnam’s FMCG and Pharmaceutical Markets with ProPak Vietnam 2018

Ho Chi Minh City, 26 January 2018 – The healthcare and pharmaceutical market in Vietnam has been expanding rapidly and in line with the country’s strong economic growth. Vietnam is amongst the highest growing markets in Asia for pharmaceutical products during the period of 2010–2016 with a compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of 19.7 per cent. The Vietnamese pharmaceutical market is expected to expand in value from $3.5 billion in 2015 to an estimated $6.6 billion by 2020, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData(1). The average growth rate of spending on drug was 14.6 per cent in 2010-2015 and is set to maintain a rate of at least 14 per cent until 2025. Spending is forecast to double to $85 per person in 2020 and $163 in 2025(2).

Vietnam’s pharmaceutical industry holds tremendous potential for future growth. Indeed, ageing population, rapid urbanization, rising income per capita, higher living standards as well as heightened health-awareness among the middle-class segment, should provide ample fuel for growth in the domestic consumption of pharmaceutical products.

Vietnam's FMCG industry is on the upswing

The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in Vietnam also boasts significant opportunities, remaining as one of the most dynamic emerging markets in Southeast Asia region. The growth of the FMCG sector in the third quarter of 2017 reached 6.4 per cent, a year-on-year rise of 3.5 percentage points, backed by a 5.8 per cent increase of volume(3).

According to the recent report released by Nielsen Vietnam, when looking deeper into six super FMCG categories nationwide (beverage - including beer, food, milk base, household care, personal care and cigarettes), beverage enjoyed a big increase with the highest growth rate at 8.5 per cent. The food sector also represents a large and growing portion, with the food sales forecasted to grow by a CAGR of 10.9 per cent over 2015-2020(4). This further illustrates the positive outlook for the country's food and drink sectors. In addition, the expansion of modern retail lifestyle will open the door for greater exposure to FMCG businesses, presenting a great opportunity for businesses to boost their production capacity and expand market reach and areas of investment.
